AI-gener-aided design has a place. Procedurally rendered environments for video games, for instance. Or any other soulless or otherwise soul-sucking-to-create thing. But is it art? Is punching in settings to a photocopier an act of inspired creation? Is the machine telling a story? Is the configuration setter using the machine to tell a story? Or are they just littering the universe with a bunch of cheaply produced Xerox copies with no intrinsic artistic merit?

The recent flood of AI trash has me appreciating all the more actual artists, their artwork and the backstories and process behind their work — feeling, a sense of history and purpose that a machine alone does not produce.

So a computer synthesized a bunch of human-produced content into an interesting rendition. So what? Thanks for sharing? Is the source material credited? No. Is there some process I can learn to emulate and incorporate into my own style? No. Is it inspiring? Maybe! Maybe it can be part of something that can be aspired to. But it's a dead thing by itself.

AI is a brilliant technology, a fantastic emerging tool that we are using to help unravel some of the more difficult problems we face and that I hope to benefit from personally. But artist it is not and calling what it produces "art" is a misnomer. I hope DA is someday soon better able to detect (probably with an AI tool) and classify AI generated designs for those who choose to view such content as much as for those who choose not to.

Browsing DeviantArt, I came across this rendering of Ferham by RyuAensland, a character from the Megaman X series of games, and she resembles a character I came up for a mock Megaman game I designed for a class project years before she made her debut.

Ferham (MMXD)

I called my project Megaman 2000 X. It was art for a mock SNES game. This being around the years 1995 – 1996. The digital files are long gone. I could not find the box. However, I did find the instruction booklet I designed. The following image is from the cover. My Ferham-like character, Chereba, is featured in the top-left corner.

I was greatly influenced by Megaman and was a huge fan (obviously). I dreamed of what I would love to experience in a Megaman game and this is my design. Here's some more pages from the booklet featuring the story and characters. Additionally, I envisioned a tournament mode where one could play the different Mavericks, Megaman and Protoman, against each other.

So yeah, if Capcom wants to dust off and develop this badass game 25 years later, call me! 🤪
